Escaping the Scroll and Overcoming Decision Paralysis

As an artist, inspiration often lives on social media, but so does distraction. What begins as a quick scroll to spark ideas turns into an hour lost comparing myself to others, doubting my own voice, and feeling paralyzed by too many choices.

Decision paralysis creeps in: Which project should I focus on? Should I post today? Should I try that new trend? Should I start a collection or finish the one I have? Before I know it, I’m drained from thinking instead of creating.

But the truth is, I don’t want my art life to be shaped by the algorithm. I want it to be shaped by vision.

The Trap of Social Media for Artists

Social media is a double-edged sword:

  • It connects us with collectors, fellow artists, and opportunities.
  • But it also fuels comparison, perfectionism, and endless distraction.

The scroll feels productive, but often it’s avoiding work that needs to be done. The avoidance of the canvas, of the messy beginnings, of making real decisions.

Why Decision Paralysis Happens

Decision paralysis shows up when I’m overwhelmed by choices. Should I start something new or finish something old? Should I share my work as it is, or wait until it’s “perfect”? Fear of making the “wrong” choice stops me from making any choice.

But indecision is its own decision, it’s choosing to stay stuck.

Tips to Overcome Scrolling & Decision Paralysis

1. Set Social Media Boundaries

Give yourself time limits. 20 minutes of intentional engagement is enough. Use apps or timers if needed.

2. Create Before You Consume

Before logging in, start your day by journaling, sketching, or painting. Let your own voice speak before the world’s.

3. Limit Choices With Structure

Instead of asking “What should I create today?” I will decide in advance: Mondays are for sketching, Wednesdays are for painting, Fridays are for writing.

4. Embrace Imperfection

Stop waiting for the “perfect” post, idea, or project. Progress matters more than perfection.

5. Trust One Step at a Time

You don’t need to plan everything today. Choose one small next step, and take it. Action clears the fog.

Reflection

Day 18, reminds me that scrolling and indecision are thieves of my time and energy. But I can escape the trap with boundaries, structure, and trust in my own process.

Social media can be a tool, but it will never replace the canvas or a sketchpad. My decisions may not always be perfect, but they will always move me forward.

Take Action

Your art deserves your presence more than the algorithm deserves your time.
