Adapting Creativity: How Visual Artist Have Adapted & Thrived

Daily writing prompt
How have you adapted to the changes brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic?

I had decided that 2019 was the year I would devote myself fully to my art. Only for Coronavirus to lock us down, put everything on pause and profoundly change our lives. As a result, visual artists had to adapt to new challenges and find innovative ways to create, share, and connect with their audiences.

It is an artist’s nature to adapt and thrive, especially in challenging times, and many have turned to creating art that reflects the current situation and raises awareness about the pandemic.

How has the art industry been affected by the global health crisis?

Covid-19 affected the art industry significantly causing gallery closures and many other events, such as art fairs and exhibitions, were canceled or moved to online. This had a major impact on artists who relied on selling their work and showcasing it in galleries.

This resulted in a loss of opportunities for artists and a decline in the overall art market. The lack of in-person gatherings also limited interactions between artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts, disrupting art networking and community-building.

What innovative techniques have artists used to adapt to the new normal?

Visual artists have found ways to continue creating and sharing their work despite the challenges Covid-19 presents. Some artists used this time to explore different mediums and techniques, resulting in innovative works of art. Despite the challenges, artists have shown resilience and adaptability in the face of the pandemic.

Virtual Exhibitions

Overall, they have found ways to showcase and sell their art through virtual exhibitions, virtual tours, online auctions, art competitions, and digital art sales. These have become the new norm, providing artists and galleries with innovative ways to reach and engage with audiences. This has also opened opportunities for emerging artists (like myself) to showcase their work and reach a wider audience.

How will the art industry continue to evolve in response to Covid-19?

While the impact of Covid-19 has been devastating, it has also pushed the art industry to evolve and embrace new technologies. Visual artists have shown immense resilience and adaptability. From virtual exhibitions to online classes, they have found innovative ways to continue creating and sharing their art with the world.

“Action and adaptability create opportunity.”

– Garrison Wynn

As we navigate through the aftermath and changes brought about by COVID-19, let us continue to support and appreciate the work of visual artists. Whether it’s purchasing their art, attending virtual events, or sharing their work on social media, every action counts.
