Today, I had to get real with myself. Not just surface-level, a real pep-talk, deep-in-the-gut, call-yourself-out, stop-running kind of real. I sat in my studio space, surrounded by half-finished pieces, unpublished work, unopened emails, and a head full of excuses. And the truth hit me: I wasn’t lacking talent. I was self-sabotaging.
Identify Negative Self-Talk
How? Through the quiet, relentless whisper of “I can’t.” “I can’t make a living from this.” “I can’t compete with what’s already out there.” “I can’t finish this piece because it’ll never be good enough anyway.” “I can’t share my work. No one will care.” And just like that, I’d stop painting. I’d delay posting. I’d ghost opportunities I secretly wanted. I’d silence my own voice because fear was louder.
Mindset Shift From “I can’t” to “I can.”
But here’s what I’m learning: a mindset shift from “I can’t” to “I can” isn’t just motivational fluff. It’s survival, liberation, and the creative CPR that breathes life back into your work when you’re suffocating under doubt.
The moment I began saying “I can,” even shakily, while still unsure, something cracked open inside me. I didn’t need to feel 100% ready. I just needed to stop being the first person to shut myself down.
“I can figure this out.”
“I can learn as I go.”
“I can try again.”
“I can make something meaningful, even if it’s messy.”
I am Capable, Creative & worthy of success.
Self-sabotage often wears a clever disguise: procrastination, perfectionism, fear of judgment, and overthinking. But at the root of it all is a belief that we’re not enough. And the only way to counteract that belief is to begin feeding yourself a new truth: I am capable. I am creative. I am worthy of success. I can.
This isn’t about toxic positivity, it’s about reclaiming your power. It’s about honoring the gift you’ve been given and choosing to nurture it, not smother it with doubt.
Today is Your Turning Point
So, if you’re reading this and you’ve been stuck in the “I can’t,” let today be your turning point. Pick up the brush. Share the work. Apply for the opportunity. Speak your art into the world. You can, and the moment you start believing that, everything changes.
