Stop Comparing: Embrace Your Unique Creative Journey

Today, I caught myself scrolling through social media again. Another artist just launched a sold-out collection, hosting a live painting, and another shared a $10K commission. And there I was, staring at my screen, quietly shrinking inside. “Why not me?”

“Am I behind?”

“Will I ever get there?”

I know I’m not supposed to compare. I know everyone’s journey is different. But sometimes, especially when my bank account is low and my confidence feels even lower, the comparison hits hard.

So, I’m writing this post to process it. To remind myself (and maybe you, too) that comparing our creative journey, especially financially, isn’t fair or helpful.

1. Money Isn’t the Full Story

This is the first thing I try to remember: What we see online is never the whole picture. That sold-out artist? Maybe they’ve been building her audience for 10 years. The $10K commission? It has taken months of negotiation, stress, and self-doubt.

And sometimes, people simply post the highlight reel, not the full movie. Just because someone is earning more right now doesn’t mean they’re more talented or more worthy. It just means they’re at a different place in their journey. And that’s okay.

2. My Path Is Meant to Look Different

I’m learning to stop using someone else’s map to navigate my life. Maybe I’m not meant to go viral yet. Maybe my growth is quieter, slower, deeper.

After all, I’m building something long-lasting, not just profitable. It’s not easy to trust that. Every time I focus on what I value, the pressure starts to lift. My focus is on creativity, connection, and purpose. I don’t have to rush to prove anything.

3. Financial Success Doesn’t Equal Artistic Worth

This one is tough, especially in a culture that loves numbers and sales stats. But I’m reminding myself daily:

  • Your art is valuable even if it hasn’t sold yet.
  • Your creativity has meaning even if it doesn’t earn 6 figures.
  • You are allowed to feel proud of your work, even in the slow seasons.

Money is important, yes, we deserve to be paid. But it’s not the only measure of success. Impact, joy, freedom, and alignment matter too.

4. When I Compare, I Disconnect from My Purpose

Every time I get caught up in comparison, I notice how quickly I lose touch with why I create. Instead of being inspired, I feel deflated.  Rather than creating freely, I start chasing trends. Instead of building my dream, I am copying someone else’s. So now, when I catch myself comparing, I pause and ask:

“What’s really bothering me right now?”

“What do I need: validation, direction, or clarity?”

“What can I celebrate about my journey today?”

Because when I reconnect to my purpose, the noise quiets.

5. Celebrating Others Doesn’t Dim My Light

This one has been powerful. When I feel jealousy creeping in, I try to shift it to celebration.

“Wow, look at what’s possible.”

“If it can happen for them, it can happen for me.”

“Let me cheer for them now and trust that my moment is coming.”

There’s space for all of us. Creativity is infinite. Money flows in many directions.

And the more I celebrate others, the more I expand what I believe is possible for me.

What I’m Choosing Today

So today, I’m choosing to:

  • Refocus on my journey
  • Celebrate small wins, not just big checks
  • Trust that I’m building something meaningful
  • Let someone else’s success inspire, not discourage me

I’m learning to believe that success isn’t a competition, it’s a collaboration with the universe. And there’s more than enough to go around.
