Overcoming Procrastination: A Journey to Artistic Success

Daily writing prompt
How do you waste the most time every day?

As an aspiring artist, I have always been passionate about creating and perfecting my craft. However, like many people, I struggle with procrastination. I find myself wasting hours every day mindlessly scrolling through social media instead of working on my art. This realization made me step back and evaluate how I am spending my time. I knew that to succeed as an artist, I needed to be more mindful of my time and prioritize my work. Hence, in this blog post, I will share my journey of learning to prioritize and overcome procrastination to reach my goals as an artist.

Acknowledging the need for change

The first step towards change is acknowledging the need for change. I had to look myself in the mirror and admit that I wasted a significant amount of time every day procrastinating and scrolling through social media. I had no one else to blame. This was hindering my progress as an artist and affecting my mental well-being. I was busy comparing myself to others working on mastering their craft. I realized I needed to change and be more mindful of my time.

Identifying Priorities

Once I acknowledge the culprit, I work on identifying my priorities. As an artist, my main goal is to create and improve my skills. However, I also have other responsibilities such as managing my social media presence, networking, and marketing my work. I made a list of all my priorities and ranked them in order of importance. I also removed all social media icons from my home screen. This helped me to have a clear understanding of where my time should be focused.

Setting a Schedule

With my priorities in mind, I created a daily schedule for myself. I allocated specific time slots for each task, including time for breaks and social media. By creating a schedule, I hold myself accountable and avoid getting distracted by social media during my designated work hours. This also helped me to work more efficiently as I prioritized my most important tasks.

Finding Alternative Ways to Relax

One of the reasons I used social media to relax was because it was easily accessible and required minimal effort. However, I realized other ways to relax and unwind without wasting time on social media. I started gardening, reading, going for walks, doing word puzzles, scheduling downtime to watch a comedy and practicing mindfulness techniques to clear my mind and reduce stress. This not only helped me to be more mindful of my time but also improved my overall well-being.

Celebrating Small Wins

I started to make progress by sticking to my schedule. I made sure to celebrate each small win. This helped to motivate me and gave me a sense of accomplishment. Each celebration served as a reminder of why I was making these changes. They helped me to stay motivated.

Conclusion

Being mindful of my time and priorities has been crucial in my journey towards becoming a successful artist. While I still struggle with procrastination at times, I have learned to be more disciplined and focused on my goals. I encourage you to evaluate how you are spending your time and make the necessary changes to achieve your dreams. Remember, time is a precious resource and it’s up to us to make the most of it.
