What activities do you lose yourself in?
Engaging in creative activities, such as cooking, writing, drawing, painting, dancing, jewelry making, and cleaning, allows me to enter a state of flow where I become completely immersed and lose track of time. These not only brings me joy and fulfillment but also helps to reduce stress and anxiety. When I am fully absorbed in a creative project, I can disconnect from the outside world and focus solely on the present moment, promoting mindfulness and a sense of relaxation.
For example, when I pick up my pencil to draw, time seems to stand still. My entire focus is consumed with the lines, shapes, and details forming under my hand. The outside world fades away, and all that matters is the creation taking shape before me. Hours can pass by, but it feels like mere minutes, lost in the flow of my art. I enter a meditative state, losing the track of time, and escaping the stresses of daily life.
The act of creating something new and unique brings me immense joy and a sense of accomplishment. During this process, I let go of any stress, worries, expectations, or judgments and simply let my creativity flow and trust in the process.
By focusing on the task at hand, I explore my imagination and follow each nudge. This leads to a sense of fulfillment, satisfaction, and self-expression. I call this “the sweet escape,” as it is therapeutic and rejuvenating. It allows me to recharge and come back to my daily tasks with a fresh perspective.
However, this intense focus on my creative pursuits can sometimes lead to neglecting other important aspects of my life such as relationships, self-care, and responsibilities. So, I have to constantly remind myself to step away from the canvas now and then to explore reality. For it is important to find a balance between creating and living a well-rounded life.
