Especially if you are often highly critical of your work and easily get discouraged. When I feel frustrated with my art, I remind myself it’s a temporary feeling. I know it’s a normal part of growth. This approach helps prevent negative emotions from defining my artistic identity and I continue creating without fear of judgment. When you practice mindfulness, you will learn to embrace your feelings. You will work through your feelings rather than letting them hinder your creative process.
Speak to Yourself as a Friend
You are often your own harshest critic. You hold yourself to impossibly high standards and beat yourself up when you fall short. But what if you treated yourself with the same kindness and compassion you showed to your friends? If a close friend came to you feeling inadequate about their work, you’d offer them kindness and encouragement. You wouldn’t criticize them. So why not extend the same courtesy to yourself? Instead of focusing on what’s wrong, try practicing self-compassion. What would you say to a close friend who’s feeling this way? Practice saying those words to yourself. For instance, “I’m proud of the effort I put into this piece, even if it didn’t turn out as planned.” We all make mistakes and face setbacks. Still, it’s necessary to remember that these do not define our worth as individuals. So be kind to yourself and give yourself the same love and support you would give a close friend.
Embrace imperfection
Perfection is often seen as the goal of any creative effort. Nonetheless, constantly striving for perfection can hinder creativity. It can create pressure to produce flawless work, leading to fear of failure and limiting your willingness to take risks. Remind yourself, “I’m proud of myself for taking this small step toward my goal.” This simple recognition can motivate you to keep moving ahead, even when things get tough.
