Embracing the Present: My Charcoal Self-Portrait Journey

Every face tells a story waiting to be unveiled, a web of emotions that captivates artists like myself. Recently, I completed the second piece of my self-portrait series, a charcoal drawing that captures my essence. Adorned with red lipstick and glasses, I aimed to express my individuality through charcoal & soft pastels. This piece holds profound significance for me, reflecting my journey of self-discovery and self-expression. Through this blog, I want to share the narrative behind this artwork. I also wish to convey a powerful message of self-love and self-acceptance.

The Inspiration: My Personal Experience

The inspiration for this portrait came from the saying, “Let go of the illusion that it could have been any different.” This shows how we often hold onto the past. We wonder about the choices we made. We think about the paths we didn’t take. We get lost in the “what ifs” and miss the current moment.

I constantly thought about my past decisions. I wondered how my life would have been different if I had chosen differently. It was a toxic cycle that stopped me from fully enjoying the current moment. But one day, I realized that holding onto the past was holding onto an illusion. It was time to let go and embrace the beautiful present of what is. The drawing reminds me to focus on the present. It reminds me to embrace the reality of what has happened. And encourages me to move ahead and make the best of every situation.

As the artist Henri Matisse said, “What characterized great artists was their ability to be in the present, to observe deeply what is around them.” This sentiment resonates with my experience of self-discovery through art.

I release the weight of my past, knowing it does not define me

“I embrace each day as a new opportunity filled with potential and possibility. I invite clarity and joy into my life with every breath. The beauty of the present moment guides my journey forward. I am worthy of growth, change, and all the wonderful experiences that lie ahead.”

The drawing is a picture of me lying down. It gives the illusion of free falling. This creates a sense of movement and freedom within the stillness/darkness. I chose to add color to the glasses and lips. This highlights those features. It accentuates their importance in expressing my individuality and vitality. The vibrant hues draw the viewer’s attention. They invite them to explore the deeper layers of the artwork. These hues also show my journey of self-discovery and the boldness of living in the moment.

The Symbolism: Red Lips and Glasses

The red lips in the portrait represent passion, vitality, and living in the moment. It’s a reminder to embrace our desires and live life to the fullest. The glasses represent clarity and perspective. When we let go of the past, our vision becomes clearer, and we can see the beauty of the present.

In the words of Rainer Maria Rilke, “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves.” This encourages embracing self-acceptance as part of the journey, rather than a destination.

The Medium: Charcoal and Red Pastel

I chose charcoal as the medium for this portrait because it is versatile and can convey emotions and depth. The red pastel adds a pop of color, symbolizing the passion and vibrancy of the present. Combining the two creates a powerful contrast, like the contrast between holding onto the past and embracing the present.

In today’s society…

We are constantly bombarded with reminders of our past mistakes. Comparisons to others make it easy to get caught up in the illusion of “what could have been.” But it’s time to let go and embrace the present, with all its beauty and imperfections. As Eckhart Tolle wisely stated, “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have.” I hope my charcoal portrait serves as a reminder to do just that. Let’s live in the moment and make the most of what we have now.
