“No Dirt, No Lotus,” My Journey Making a Mala for Meditation

After the first mala design, I knew it was the start of something special. Despite how simple it seems, it took me several attempts to achieve this. The designing process taught me to slow down, pay attention and be mindful of my thoughts and actions. In addition, obstacles are necessary for my evolution, just as dirt is essential for lotus flowers to grow.

Each time I restring each bead, I remind myself, “No mud, no Lotus.” Beading is a meditative process. It is a lesson to live with intention and trust the process and the Universe. This was an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect my mind, body, and spirit. For grounding, protection, and stability, Black Obsidian and Pyrite are used. Also, the turtle charms used as a reminder to slow down and the tassel represent the lotus.

The Lotus Flower grows in murky water. Another reminder that difficulties can provide the best opportunity for your development. Challenges are necessary to survive and thrive. Without it, you would not grow and blossom.

When creating lasting change there will be mud (disturbance) in your physic and it can be quite frightening. There may be feelings of discomfort and doubt. The only way out is to push through to the other side. You cannot succeed in your comfort zone. Instant gratification only provides temporary satisfaction. Strive for continuous balance and understanding, using your experiences as a guide.

With each obstacle you overcome, you learn gratitude and patience. I am thankful for life’s ebb and flow. Difficult times have made me stronger. To become the person I am today, I had to go through many things. I strive to see the good in every situation and find hidden lessons. It was an honor to create this beautiful piece of jewelry for a friend. This opens the door to growing my spiritual practice and learning about these sacred beads. Finally, I find meaning behind creating. For what is the purpose of my gifts and experiences if not used for enlightenment and enrichment?
